Compare and contrast: target market

There is a close relationship between newspapers and their target audience.
The way a news is presented depends on the newspaper's intention:
(a) to reflect opinions/attempt to appeal to a certain target group (thus, fulfilling the needs and interests of the target audience), and/or
(b) to form opinions/attempt to influence/direct the readers (thus, contain specific semiotic codes and signs).

Hence, I did some background research on the chosen newspapers in order to understand better.

Findings
1. The Guardian: The fact that Christians constitute more than two third of the Britain population (although mainly Anglicans), and this is a newspaper that takes the liberal stance which tends to focus more on individual rights and freedom, it is unsurprising that the newspaper tie this issue to the 2007 case where a Catholic church is barred from using "Allah" in its publications, showing concerns of the religious tensions under the Printing Presses and Publications Act in Malaysia

2. Sin Chew Daily: a Chinese Malaysian newspaper, showed more local images and interviewed a few Chinese politicians (from both the ruling government and opposition) to portray the local lifestyle and suggest how the Chinese community generally view on this matter

Compare and contrast: contents and images

Compare and contrast chart on contents of the two newspapers
** The Guardian had its coverage in the form of straight news while Sin Chew Daily had 4 in the form of straight news, 1 editorial (Malay version of Ultraman The Ultra Power banned. all because of translator's fault from "God" to "Allah")

Comparing images of both newspapers (captions included)

Findings about the images
1. both newspapers showed Ultraman toys/merchandises for children in the Malaysian scene (refer to captions)
2. Sin Chew had more images, including one from the social media platform showing the controversial line from Ultraman The Ultra Power

Question 1 it is

After some considerations, I've finally decided to pick Question 1 as my essay question.

Question 1: Analyse in detail the coverage of a single story, comprising of text and images, in two contrasting newspapers or magazines, one of which should be a South East Asian publication. Compare and contrast the techniques used and the target market for each sample.

Requirements:

1. choose 2 newspapers OR 2 magazines with the same story which have both text and image (with one a South East Asian publication)
2. compare and contrast (similarities and distinctive features) between the two:
   (a) techniques
   (b) target audience

The news I've chosen is about the banning of Ultraman comic book over the usage of "Allah" by the Home Ministry of Malaysia. It is found in the world news section in The Guardian, an international British newspaper and the national news section in Sin Chew Daily, a Malaysian Chinese newspaper. Both coverage are online versions.

The Guardian (7 March 2014):

Malaysia censors Ultraman comic for 'irresponsible use of the word Allah'
AND
Sin Chew Daily (7 March 2014):
1. Home Ministry: Only the Malay version of Ultraman The Ultra Power is banned. Ultraman did not break the law*
2. MCA: the statement 'threaten public safety' is not justified. "should instill positive values of Ultraman"*
3. "The explanation of banning Ultraman is ridiculous". Gerakan: Home Ministry should reconsider the decision*
4. Loke Siew Fook: improper wordings should be amended. 'what wrong did Ultraman do?'*
5. Malay version of Ultraman The Ultra Power banned. all because of translator's fault from "God" to "Allah"*
* translated from Chinese to English

The reason of me choosing this particular news is because it is interesting to know how and why different newspapers (in this case: different country, different language) chose different approach/techniques to report about religion-related media censorship, which is quite a sensitive issue in Malaysia.

eg. merely facts to inform OR uncover more details to inform or to clarify OR including other issues or information to distract or to provoke?

In the coming posts, I'll do

1. a simple compare and contrast on the newspapers' contents and images
2. compare and contrast between target audience and the contents of both newspapers
3. social semiotic analysis guided by Daniel Chandler

It may not be Question 3 after all...

I realised that I wrongly interpreted Question 3. To be on the safe side, I better continue my exploration on few more essay questions in this and the coming posts.

Question 1:
Analyse in detail the coverage of a single story, comprising of text and images, in two contrasting newspapers or magazines, one of which should be a South East Asian publication. Compare and contrast the techniques used and the target market for each sample.

TIME (7 March, 2014): A Japanese Superhero Is Apparently Destroying Malaysia OR

Reuters (7 March, 2014): Comic superhero Ultraman slain by Malaysian censors

                                             VS

Local Newspaper - The Star Online
6 March, 2014: Home Ministry bans publication of 'Ultraman the Ultra Power' over usage of "Allah"
7 March, 2014: Home Ministry bans Ultraman book, Use of 'Allah' in Ultraman comic main reason for banA brief history of Ultraman
8 March, 2014: Book banned but Ultraman can power on
11 March, 2014: Ultraman's most epic battles: But can he survive the ban?

Which one to choose? * ban reason before 8/3/14 are all based on assumptions

- TIME VS Reuters
~ generally, both have similar content but TIME should be a better choice as it contains images for visual semiosis discourse analysis
~ having said that, Reuters's report on Khairy's statement is very interesting, as if the magazine is hinting that there is a different opinion within the government

- The Star Online
~ 7/3/14: to avoid bias and has more information compared to 6/3/14
  ~ 8/3/14 (maybe): as a follow up

What to do next?
- has a whole list of semiotic analysis examples which I can choose and apply in this essay
- the step-by-step guides should be helpful in making my essay more rational and organised
